Labatt Blue U.S. Pond Hockey Championships Tournament Structure

Tournament Structure Overview

  1. Games are 4 on 4 games with max 8 person teams (no goalies).
  2. Rinks measure approx. 140 x 75 feet with 18” boards.
  3. Goals are 6 feet in width. 
  4. In true pond fashion, the ice will be shoveled by the two opposing teams prior to game start. 
  5. Games consist of two 15-minute halves with a 2-minute break.
  6. Each Open, Cedar and 40+ Open team will be guaranteed 2 games on Friday and 2 games on Saturday. Women's teams will be guaranteed 2 games on Saturday and 2 games on Sunday. The Golden Shovel Championship will be a single elimination tournament played on Sunday. Rink Rat teams are guaranteed 3 games with games spread between Saturday and Sunday.

Game Tie-Breaking Procedures

If at the end of regulation two teams are tied, they will play a 3-minute sudden death overtime. If at the end of the 3-minute overtime no goals have been scored, there will be a 2-minute sudden death overtime.  If at the end of overtime play no goals have been scored, the winner will be determined by a coin toss. The home team (team 1) will call the toss.

0 Points for a Loss

Ties in standings will be broken by highest total number of goals for followed by goal differential.

Golden Shovel Championship Qualifying

Open Division
80 teams - 16 pools - 32 teams will advance

The top team from each pool (plus 16 wild card teams: calculated by most points, ties in point total are broken by highest total number of goals scored followed by goal differential) will advance to the championship round.

40+ Division
20 teams - 4 pools - 6 teams will advance 

The top team from each pool (plus 2 wild card teams: calculated by most points, ties in point total are broken by highest total number of goals scored followed by goal differential) will advance to the championship round.

Women's Division
20 teams - 4 pools - 8 teams will advance

The top team from each pool (plus 4 wild card teams: calculated by most points, ties in point total are broken by highest total number of goals scored followed by goal differential) will advance to the championship round.

The Dean's Sled Division
4 teams - 1 pool - 2 teams will advance

The top team in the pool (plus 1 wild card team: calculated by most points, ties in point total are broken by lowest total number of goals scored against followed by goals for) will advance to the championship round. This will change based on the number of teams registered.

Silver Scoop Championship Qualifying

Cedar Division
80 teams - 16 pools - 32 teams will advance

The top team from each pool (plus 16 wild card teams: calculated by most points, ties in point total are broken by highest total number of goals scored followed by goal differential) will advance to the championship round.

Rink Rat Division
88 teams - 22 pools - 32 teams will advance

The top team in each pool (plus 10 wild card teams: calculated by most points, ties in point total are broken by lowest total number of goals scored against followed by goals for) will advance to the championship round.

**We reserve the right to change the number of teams/pools/wild cards in each division. The game guarantees and a minimum of 2 wildcards per division (excluding Sled) will not change.**
