The term “pond hockey” is usually associated with a handful of words: winter, kids, ice, and joy. For many hockey enthusiasts, pond hockey conjures up an image of kids on the backyard pond in toques and winter jackets, their boots marking off the goals and a shovel thrown aside after clearing the ice. Cutting-edge technology usually doesn’t come to mind, but it may turn out that technology guarantees the presence of the USPHC tournament, one that celebrates the roots of hockey.

The US Pond Hockey Championship was born six years ago, when Fred Haberman was inspired while playing shinny at Lake of the Isles. Haberman and company set out to create a tournament for fellow pond hockey enthusiasts, and for the past five years Haberman and his team have been running the wildly popular event on the lakes of Minneapolis. This past October, Haberman passed the Golden Shovel to two new commissioners, Justin Kaufenberg and Carson Kipfer. For the co-founders of TST Media, taking over the tournament, which they participated in annually, was an easy decision: they were looking for a charitable event that the entire staff was invested in, and Haberman’s  PR firm simply could not keep up with the demands of running the event as it grew into a nationwide phenomenon.
