USPHC Players and Fans,

We've gotten several weather and ice conditions questions via email, FB, and Twitter so want to share a few thoughts from the home office.

First, Nokomis has a solid base of one foot plus some. Even after the unseasonably warm weather in the MPLS area, the ice has held up very well. The top layers can be impacted, but a few hours of below freezing temps takes care of that.

We watch the forecast daily. A number of things contribute to ice conditions and growth. Obviously, temperature is a big deal, but cloud cover and wind also have huge impacts. Don't look at a spot temperature of 35 degrees and assume that weather is automatically melting ice. On the bright side, ice freezes much faster than it thaws. (disclaimer, I'm not a scientist so that statement may or not be true, but it sure seems that way)

After another warmer day today, it looks like 5 or 6 days of below freezing weather, a good chunk in the low single digits and teens. We anticipate additional ice being made during that time. Also, while longer term forecasts currently show mid-20's to mid-30's those undoubtedly will change. As a person who has watched these long term forecasts in January closer than any human on Earth over the past few years, anything longer than 7 days never pans out.

USPHC construction starts in a week to 10 days. We'll start providing live reports in the next few days as we know many of you are interested.

We love you all and can't wait to see you at Nokomis.

We put together a chart of the next 10 days with Blue representing positive weather, and Red representing not so great weather.
